AND HERE IS SOME STORY OR SOME CRAP. So yeah, remember some number of entries ago I mentioned a song and how it reminded me of something something something Jacen/Tenel Ka? I sat down, put it on repeat and this is what came of it.

Here is the song. And here is the story. (LOL HICKEYS WHAT -- i mean, it matches my story about poor teenage boy embarrassments SO WHY NOT?)

It felt really good to write this actually. I miss J/TK. Way too much. OH NO, I MIGHT HAVE TO WRITE MORE. And I can definitely say that part of this idea I snuck from the Star Wars/BioShock mash-up I have been working on... speaking of... I THINK I WILL START POSTING THAT SOON, MUAHAHA.

Again, the cast list. Let me show you. Cut straight from my SW/BS intro post. REFRESH YO'SELVES. XD

And I mean some of these are characters who are only even just mentioned once -- and their Star Wars counterparts. I just had to make a list of Star Wars counterparts. MUAHAHAHAH~

Alana Dooley Soloman (Allana)
Andrew "Andy" Soloman (Anakin Solo)
Drake (Droekle)
Ezekiel/"Zeke" (Zekk)
Isaak (Isolder)
Jackson Fellows (Jagged Fel)
Jane Soloman (Jaina Solo)
Jase Soloman (Jacen Solo)
Karen Wells (Taryn Zel)
Kip Durant (Kyp Durron)
Kristin Wells (Trista Zel)
Louie (Lowbacca -- "Lowie")
Raymond Thurston (Raynar Thul)
Tanith Kendall Dooley (Tenel Ka Djo)
Teneil Dooley (Teneniel Djo)
Victoria "Torry" Tela (Tahiri Veila)

(There might be more that pop-up too, or mentioned. I can skew ages a bit so maybe there will be some Benjamins or Marys or Leas running around. AND... uh, Han and Luke? I can't really do anything with those. D:

AND AND AND WE CAN'T FORGET LANDER OR LANDON OR WHATEVER LANDO WOULD BE XD)

WHY CAN I NOT STOP SNEEZING? And this song makes me want to get up and groove. Who wants to start a dance party with me, let's go. LET'S GO.

Fandom: Highlander
Pairing: Duncan/Methos, Duncan/Tessa, Duncan/Amanda
Length: ~6500
Author on LJ: [info]mmmchelle
Author Website: Chelle's Nightstand
Why this must be read: It's difficult to pick just one of Chelle's fics to rec, but this one is my favorite. This is a bittersweet and angsty au, where Duncan meets Methos about 175 years earlier than he does on the show. Chelle begins this with Methos meeting up with Duncan and Tessa under his cover of a Watcher and introduced by Joe. It follows with Tessa's eventual death and Methos rushing to comfort Duncan and the aftermath to that. This is the story of a Methos who is in love with Duncan and does what he can to make Duncan's life better. This is a Duncan who doesn't quite know what he wants or needs, but does know that Methos makes him feel better. And in the end, this is the story where Duncan realizes that he waited too late to figure out what Methos needs from him. With strong appearances by Tessa, Joe and Richie and a cameo by Amanda this is not a happy love story. It is still powerful and full of strong emotions.

Length: Approx 5500 words (SVSF) & 2400 words (GHVSF)
Author on LJ: [info]ausmac

Why this must be read:

Sometimes a little smutty goodness is just right for whatever ails you.

When it’s very smartly wrapped up in a pair of very *in-character* fantasies, where both Gene and Sam imagine each other as Manchester’s master criminal, so much the better.

Excerpt from Gene Hunt’s Very Strange Fantasy:

Of course, his libido picked that moment to sit on its hairy haunches and howl at the moon. Because Tyler was like the moon, big and bright and unobtainable. And for whatever reason - or lack of it - something about the man just turned Gene Hunt on like a deviant in a sex aid shop.

Why this must be read: Gen fics come in many flavors including angst, humor, case/action, AU and even the flavor some call, “slice of life”, which highlights friendship outside of 'foxhole' scenarios usually set as the basis for strong bonds between males. We know that the commercial pressures of screenplays often lead to key interactions in 'bridge' scenes being removed from episodes. This leaves the kind of holes in canon relationships which can only be filled in fanon. In this week's recc, a team of classic authors arrived at that balance of elements which

LOL STAR WARS STUFF FOLLOWS THIS BEEP, JUST A WARNING. BEEP.

OKAY FOR REAL WE NEED MORE STAR WARS TWITTERERERS. Cause my Tenel Ka and my Jacen are lonely on there and like 90% of the other EU characters on there are seriously questionable. Some of them seem like they have no idea what a STAR WAR is like if I said, "WHAT IS A VONG?" They would say, "WHAT I HAD FOR BREAKFAST? STOP TALKING IN THIS FUNNY LANGUAGE." And there is a Zekk and also a Lowbacca I am Jacen and Tenel Ka are following but they are mysteriously missing, which makes me sad. Cause they seemed like they would be smart and fun.

So the new layout of echuta.net is pretty much going to be a big mesh of everything from before that sort of sat on seperate sites (rehashing a layout from another section of the site, blah blah), but I think I have figured out a way to put it all together, which seems to be working out. Plus, it means more fun for everyone goofing off with their holo-reporters and generally making an ass out of themselves and the Solos/Skywalkers/all the etc. people. Because that is why we all love the EU so much, yeah? FOR THE CRACK SPICE.

Okay, I guess that's enough SW stuff for now. XD

It feels so weird for it to be getting dark so early. I'm not used to driving home after the sun is down. MAKES IT EASIER FOR ME TO STEALTH SING IN MY CAR WHERE NO ONE CAN SEE LOL.

And I need to play some Fallout 3. I am getting the shakes cause I haven't had my fix of the Capital Wasteland in so long. Speaking of games, I beat Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box last night. It was adorable. <3

Borderlands? Still awesome.

Why this must be read:
This story gripped me from the start and wouldn't let go of me. It's dark, very dark, and shows where good people can be led to when doctrined from early childhood. But it's also a story of hope and redemption. And the triomph of sheer willpower and fait.

I utterly adore this one.

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: None
Length: 11K
Author on LJ: [info]jojosimco
Author Website: Fic Masterlist

Why this must be read: Because it’s the best kind of hurt/comfort. Hutch is hurt, out of hospital and not really coping, so he needs help and comfort, but what he’s got is Starsky. Jo has a deceptively light touch with these two. A little bit of humour, a gentle lyricism that gets under the characters’ skins, and a perfectly adequate dose of hurt and comfort. I love a hurt and irritable Hutch, and she writes his POV beautifully.

Hutch stared at him. Never in his life had he known Starsky bring calm into a room. Doors shuddered on their hinges when he arrived. Atmospheres vibrated after a collective sharp intake of breath. Starsky always upped the tempo because... well, upping the tempo was what he did best.

Or have I been getting you all wrong, all this time?

Hutch was overwhelmed by his circumstances. Overwhelmed by being given just what he needed, at the moment he needed it most, when he hadn't even realised he needed it and when it was the last thing he expected. He pitched forward, wrapping his arms around Starsky's neck, falling into him with all his weight, hugging as hard as his protesting body allowed. At that moment he knew no other way to express his gratitude. Starsky just took the weight and hugged him back. Then he pushed him gently into an upright position.

"Rough day, huh?" he said.

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Characters/Pairing/Verse: All Seven - Gen, OW
Length: 15,017
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Judy's home page
Why this must be read:
My first rec was a death fic and this one is a ghost story (I'm sensing a theme). This story was a 2009 MoM award nominee.

The idea that even death can't separate the seven is a very appealing idea to me. In this story it's Ezra who refuses to move on. Initially, the others mourn for him before they come to the realization that he's become a ghost. Ezra has fun with his new status, but he also begins to understand that he always was an important part of the group and that they are truly happy that he is still around.

Excerpt:
Ezra was going to drive them all crazy.

Chris picked his hat up off the ground for the third time that morning, his jaw clenched to keep from cussing the ghost out. Ezra was no where to be seen, but Chris could hear his chuckles following him as the gunslinger made his way to the jail.

The town folk he passed gave Larabee and his glare wide berth.

Chris entered the jail and closed the door quickly behind him forcing Ezra to pass through the door, something Chris knew he hated. Ezra came in with a grin on his face anyway and leaned back against the door.

“I am sorry, Chris,” he chuckled shamelessly. “I couldn’t resist.” Ezra’s grin widened at the glare he received.

Why this must be read: Written in the familiar style of 50 prompts, one sentence per prompt, except the prompts really don't matter here. The author does a fantastic job of summing up everything heartbreaking and wonderful about the show, and the non-linear, fractured storytelling imposed by the style perfectly captures the splintering chaos of warfare. Just beautiful.

Bravery can be realized in the strangest of moments, almost as though by accident – the unfurling of a parachute, the endless rat-a-tat-tat from a machine gunner, the snap of a branch in the pale shadows of the moonlight, the exploding shell from behind, the sight of blood, the slip of it, the taste, the blood, yes, the blood, the –

Hey there :)
I apologise for delay in delivering the goods- the last week will probably stay in my memory as The Worst Attack of RL in the History of My Short Life.
TWARLHoMSL.
Well, anyway... here we go:

Fandom: Lord of The Rings
Pairing: gen
Length: Long (1 123 KB, which is 662 pages in Word... etc. ;)
Author on LJ: I don't think she has one
Author Website: @ FF.net
Why this must be read:

This is a part of the series (it's the third piece actually) focusing on Legolas and Aragorn's friendship in their merry days before the Quest. This does not however mean that you need to read the previous stories from the series to understand this one- there're some allusions made, aye, but you are perfectly able to deduce and understand their meaning. I, for example, hadn't had even a glimple of one single line from the first and second fic before I stumbled upon To Walk in Night, and it didn't spoil my enjoyment in any way while reading.
Nili managed to do something that less and less (even gifted) authors of fanfiction manage recently: she has a plot. And amazing one at that. I adore the way she combines great humour (I was honestly dying from laughter during the first few pages, she enchanted me so strongly) and angst (also very well done, well managed and well justified ;P ).
Another point why this piece is so exceptional? Good original characters. They are thrilling- and they are very much alive, with personalities, background, ambitions, thoughts of their own, reasoning- they really fit into the canon, actually.
What else do we have?
Hm. "Good" villains? Check. (good, as you're most likely aware, is a matter of perspective)
The last thing I wanted to point out is the way no character is treated in a shallow way. The story's main focus remains Legolas and Aragorn, however we see much of Glorfindel, the twins, and beforementioned OCs (the fact which will not worry you- I am usually very wary of any Original Characters, but I fell in love with Nili's creations instantly.)

Everyone in baseball RPF fandom is familiar with [info]candle_beck's writing, and it would be easy to just cherry-pick fics off her masterlist, but I'm going to start off by giving some under-appreciated writers some love.

Fandom: BASEBALL RPF
Pairing: Russ Adams/Aaron Hill
Length: 16,034
Author on LJ: [info]instrumentality
Author Website: instrumentality's fic at The Boys of Summer
Why this must be read: I love the concept of the bildungsroman. Coming-of-age tales are perhaps my favorite type of fiction; I read two copies of Catcher in the Rye to oblivion in high school. I especially love baseball coming-of-age tales, and [info]instrumentality has written exactly that. Despite the fact this is fan fiction, the story feels full and real, complex and layered. The characters are multidimensional and feel realistic, and the resolution to the story isn’t neat or pat. There aren’t any easy answers in real life, and To the End (of the Beginning) isn’t an easy story. Happy endings aren’t always what you think they’re going to be. The fact that [info]instrumentality can take a familiar trope - star-cross’d lovers - and use it to craft a compelling and satisfying story is a testament to her skills as a writer.
